You play as the Master Chief, a cybernetically enhanced supersoldier, and are accompanied by an AI named Cortana
You fight enemy aliens called the Covenent and attempt to uncover the secrets of the Halo
Halo are artificial ring shaped worlds created to stop the Flood from getting to any other parts of the universe
Once activated, the Halo will kill all of the Floods food, basically everything but the Flood making them starve to death
Master Chief and Cortana cause the Pillar of Autumn to explode, destroying the Halo along with it

Halo is set in 25XX
Humans have colonized planets other than Earth using slipspace travel, similar to hyperspace, to get to them
A secret military project called the SPARTAN Project is established on Reach, an earth-like exoplanet, to create biologically engineered cyborg supersoldiers
27 years before the game starts, an extremely advanced group of alien races allied by the same religon, called the Covenent, begin destroying human worlds because they beleive humanity is an insult to the gods
The soldiers of the SPARTAN-II Project were very effective against the Covenent, but there were not enough of them to make a difference in the war
The Covenent attack and destroy the colony on Reach
The starship Pillar of Autumn escapes Reach with a SPARTAN-II Project soldier on board, the Master Chief
Pillar of Autumn uses slipspace to hopefully lead the Covenent away from Earth
